A proportional unit used to describe the purity of gold alloys. Based on the number 24, gold alloys can be described by the percentage of gold in a sample; 14 karat, for instance, refers to the fraction 14/24ths, or 58.5% gold. A more scientific description, gaining in popularity and standard in Europe, is to refer to parts per thousand, or .585.
