About the Artist
Dawn Estrin
Bijou Graphique
Dawn and George are a married couple living in Williamsburg Virginia. They met at Colonial Williamsburg, a living history museum where George still works as the Master Toolmaker. Dawn worked for the museum as a bookbinder and a photographer before leaving the safe 9-5 world to pursue her interest in jewelry, an interest introduced to her as a young teen student at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

George has lived all over the United States, as a young child on isolated lighthouse islands in the Pacific Northwest. He was born with a great artistic mind, and this combined with his great technical understanding has brought about an artist that is rare in this world today.

Working together at their home studio and workshop, they together create a line of work that goes beyond the merely decorative...it gives a person something to think about. Their creative process is simply a by-product of their living under the same roof...ideas come together during the daily course of life.

They design and build the jewelry together. George draws upon years of accumulated knowledge about a multiplicity of materials and techniques to design and build the jewelry. He conceives processes that are used in the making and invention of the pieces and also makes many of the tools that are used in their creation.

Dawn works on the imagery used, all things that she carefully chooses or creates herself. She has a vast collection of antique photographs, as well as a collection of her own photographs that she draws upon.
Artist Statement:
"The images chosen convey many things...they are inviting but mysterious and are presented to the viewer in intimate terms...they say something about the wearer as well as themselves.

Much of the imagery that Dawn uses is about the life, loves, and fantasies of women. Gustave Flaubert wrote, "I am not a woman-I am a world." This sums up what makes Bijou Graphique so unique...it is a presentation of the world of woman. "
