Inspired by the graphic qualities of traditional quilt designs, this mosaic wearable pin is a true treasure! Made from individual bits of eggshell, this evocative pin has a glittering, luminous quality to it. The sanitized shells are painted with custom-mixed enamels and broken into bits which are then applied, piece by piece, to a maple hardwood blank to create the original pin design. Signed on back by the artist.

Tougher than you might think but handle with care as you would any handmade jewelry. Do not immerse in water. Clean softly with a damp cloth if necessary.

Background:
My training, degree and first 10 years in the working world were driven by a love of graphic design. A change in focus came in 1999 when construction of a rock path in my garden revealed a knack for mosaic. Experimentation with tile and other materials led me to my medium of choice -- painted eggshell! I formed my company, Quiltblox® in 2001 and made custom-made block-shaped boxes featuring quilt-inspired mosaics. Quiltblox® Mosaic Pins were introduced in 2003. My most-recent turn in the road has led me to sculptural pieces, but I still enjoy the cozy couple of hours I spend getting to know each pin as it reveals itself; and I most enjoy sending them out into the world to share their happiness! My work has been commissioned cross-country, from Oscar nominees at the 76th Annual Academy Awards in 2004 to The White House in 2005.

Artist Statement:
"I have an affinity for order. I love to take many chaotic pieces, assign each piece a place in the universe, and create one harmonious object. At its core, that is why my mosaic work exists. With all the chaos in the world, it calms me to create and hold in my hand just a little bit of harmony. The straight lines I impose take this concept a little further and provide, to me, a nice juxtaposition to the random, sometimes ragged edges of each eggshell bit. "

Technique:
Thoughtful friends and neighbors contribute eggshells which I sanitize, paint with custom-mixed enamels, break into tiny bits and apply these bits one by one (with pointy-ended tweezers) to a maple hardwood blank to create an original design.
