This gorgeous and evocative piece is embodied with a strong energy of growth, healing and a sense of inner grounding. A powerful piece for anyone faced with the deeper challenges of life and the amazing transformation that comes about in facing these challenges head on.The pendant, Torn, represents some of the more difficult choices in life we come face to face with. Sometimes these choices make oneself feel broken in half or ripped apart right down the middle. Crossroads in life can make it hard to move forward with what we know is ultimately best for ourselves in the long-run. The whole and sturdy heart, in which the split heart rests upon, represents the wholeness or solid feeling we gain once we make our final decision and move forward.Cloisonné is a labor intensive technique in which layers of glass are fired on a metal surface. The enamel is then sanded down and polished. After this process, a beautiful piece of jewelry is created around the cloisonné design.

Background:
As far back as I can remember, I was disassembling jewelry, playing with fishing swivels, and making my own inventions from these parts. As a child, art was my strength. It came naturally to me. When I was fourteen, I took my first metal-smithing class, and with one ignition of a blowtorch I had found my path in life. For the next four years, I poured my heart and soul into metal-smithing in high school art classes. I went on to Fashion Institute of Technology in N.Y.C. and graduated in 1993 with a degree in jewelry and gems. Realizing that there weren't many jewelers doing enamel, I decided to learn the ancient technique of Byzantine enameling. I took one class and taught myself from then on, always experimenting with new things and new ideas. By the time I was 20, I had started my own business doing custom jewelry orders and selling my work in galleries, which I continue to this day. Recently, I was honored with the award Best in Jewelry at the Spring Tempe Festival of the Arts. Jewelry and art are my life's work and passion. I do hope my creations bring you as much joy as it does me creating!

Artist Statement:
"Julie Glassman designs and fabricates jewelry from her home studio on the Western Slope in Colorado. All of her designs are made only by the artist herself keeping each piece truly authentic. She does not use any pre-made or manufactured parts in her work except for the sterling silver snake chains that are included with any pendant orders. There are so many wonderful colors in which she strives to extract in her work. When she isn't creating at her workbench you can find her fly-fishing on one of Colorado's many fine rivers or hiking in the mountains. This is the main source of Julie's inspiration in which is extracted into her jewelry. "

Technique:
Rarely do I sketch out my designs before extracting my ideas into metal or glass unless the design is extremely intricate. I prefer to start with the raw materials themselves since I understand how they will respond. Working with the metal, stones and powdered glass is "my canvas" in which my ideas are sketched or expressed. Most of my designs come from emotions or the path that life offers me as an individual.
