Ochre
Clays which are used to make the colors yellow ochre and red ochre for ceramic glazes. The name for a number of iron bearing surface clays which can be used as glaze or slip colorants. Fired colors range from tan to black.
Off-hand Blown Glass
Glass which is shaped and finished by blowing and with hand tools rather than by using molds.
Offset Lithography
On an offset press the image is transferred from the lithographic image plate to a cylindrical blanket, and then onto paper.
Offset Printing
A process in which an inked plate is used to make an impression on the rubber surface of a roller which transfers it to paper. Planographic printing by indirect image-transfer from photomechanical plates. The plate transfers ink to a rubber-covered cylinder, which "offsets" the ink to the paper. Also called photo-offset and offset lithography.
Ogee
Synonymous to cyma, a type of molding with an s-shaped, curving profile.
Oil Paint
Refers to a paint medium and its associated techniques or any work so produced. Oil paint is made from ground pigments suspended in oil, usually linseed. The most flexible and luminous of all paint mediums. A paint which is a drying oil is the vehicle. Oil color is more easily mixed than acrylic color. A paint medium consisting of pigments suspended in drying oils, usually linseed. The oil keeps the paint fluid for a period of time and then acts as a drying and hardening agent. Oil paint is unsurpassed for textural variation, and for creating subtle effects with color. A paint in which natural oil - usually linseed - is the medium that binds the pigments.
Oil Paintings
Oil is the classic medium for painting. And throughout history there are more great paintings done in oil than any other method. Oil colors have the benefit of allowing to create smooth surfaces and a life-like shading effect, as well as massive brush strokes. Oil paintings are usually done on canvas, though oil paints can also be used for other surfaces. Since paint itself as well as the surface is rather expensive, oil paintings may be more expensive than other paintings.
Omega Clip
A hinge shaped like the Greek Omega symbol used to clip the stem of an earring to the ear. Also known as a “French clip.”
Once Fire
A slow firing cycle which combines both bisque and glaze firings. Also called "single fire".
Onlay
Something laid or applied over something else, creating slight relief. In furniture, to apply a veneer or decorative appliqué.
Opacifier
A relatively insoluble glaze substance. Minute particles reflect light and render the glaze opaque.
Opalescent glaze
Glaze with a milky, moonstone or translucent quality.
Opaque
Not transparent. That which does not transmit or reflect light. Impenetrable by light; not transparent or translucent.
Open Firing
A fuel firing in which the flame touches the ware directly.
Open Form
A form whose contour is irregular or broken, having a sense of growth, change, or unresolved tension; form in a state of becoming.
Optical Color Mixture
The tendency of the eyes to blend patches of individual colors placed near one another so as to perceive a different, combined color. Also, any art style that exploits this tendency, especially the pointillism of Georges Seurat. Apparent rather than actual color mixture, produced by interspersing brush strokes or dots of color instead of physically mixing them. The implied mixing occurs in the eye of the viewer and produces a lively color sensation.
Organic
An image that shows a relationship to nature as opposed to man-made images. Any shape that resembles a naturally occurring form or that suggests a natural growing or expanding process.
Organic Art
An art form that emphasizes an object alive in its own right and not contrived.
Original
An original work is considered to be an authentic example of the works of an artist, rather than a reproduction or imitation.
Ottoman
A backless, armless, upholstered seat, often used as a footstool.
Over-dyeing
The process of dyeing a second color over a previous one.
Overglaze
A glaze decoration applied on the surface of a fired glaze which is then refired.
Overlap Effect
Spatial relationships are achieved by placing one object in front of another. The object closest to the viewer blocks out the view of any part of any other object located behind it (or, where the two objects overlap, the one in back is obscured).
Overshot
A distinct weaving pattern or the technique for achieving it. It involves a special loom threading and the use of heavy yarn alternating with a finer yarn in the weft or narrow direction.
Oxidation Fire
A firing during which the kiln chamber retains an ample supply of oxygen.
Oxide
A compound containing oxygen and other elements. Sometimes refers to metallic chemicals used for coloring clays or glazes.
Oxidize
The process of chemical alteration that occurs when certain minerals come into contact with oxygen. The result is a darkening or coloring of the metal. Can be accelerated or controlled for effect.
