Helianthus is better known by the common name sunflower, yet its household name is directly translated from the Latin version. But who really cares what something’s called when you are in its awesome presence! They could be yellow big-face flower’ for all I care, but that wouldn’t change the way I felt when I got up before sunrise and drove east of Longmont before I came upon this spectacle. About 100,000 massive, yellow heads stared face front as if they expected me to issue marching orders. But they seemed to love being what they were. I had this sense that they knew their purpose—to shine brightly and to give off a lot of pollen so the chain of life could continue. No other creature could fill the void should sunflowers cease to exist. Or perhaps I was doing a bit of projecting and needed to go home and get a bit more rest. Either way, here’s proof of the beauty laid before us if we choose to look. An 11 x1 4 print, delivered in a poster tube and ready for framing and matting of your choice. Prints are also available as an 8 x 10, 16 x 24 or 20 x 30.

Background:
My job is to go out and labor at my passion. Tough task, but somebody's got to do it. I simply go forth and express myself by choosing the light and composition that feels right to me. But in all honesty, I get way too much credit for something I did not create. I merely went to the right place at the right time and put into play my technical knowledge. God gets all the credit, however, since His fingerprints are all over the land. Smell the pungent, fresh aroma of spruce needles or the sweet smell of decaying aspen leaves and it just confirms that creation is too unnecessarily beautiful to be a product of mere happenstance.

Artist Statement:
"Just one week before 9/11/ 2001, my wife, Tonya, and I sold most everything we owned and quit our jobs to backpack around the world. A three month trip became a year as we moved continuously eastward through each of the world’s 24 time zones. We recorded on film the bullfights of Spain, the spiny backbone of the Swiss Alps, life on the streets of Hanoi and the desolation of Australia’s Outback. But the best scenes were the ones we captured only in our memories. Like hearing the Muslim call to prayer in Istanbul or the musty smell of the cellar where dynamic Umberto created his grandfather’s traditional Italian schiaccetra dessert wine. I’ll never forget having tea with a Chinese woman in her tiny hut after she helped us cross a dangerous ledge 1000 feet above the raging Yangtze River in Leaping Tiger Gorge. But once we came home to Colorado, we soon realized the beauty of our own state rivals just about anything the world has to offer. We moved from Boulder to Longmont and bought our first home, all while setting out to pursue a livelihood we could never have envisioned a year earlier. Tonya is an equal partner--she frames most of our work and handles more details than I can count. We hope you enjoy the result!"
