This Shakespeare pin is from my Books and Authors series. The pins are built up in layers from heavy artboard, paper, paint, and embellished with raised dots. They are coated several times with a water resistant finish. They are approximately 1 3/4 inches square. The hanging charm is 2 sided brass. The comedy side is featured, but you can also order it with the tragedy side showing.

Background:
I decided to work on my own and created my own company in 1987 designing jewelry, giftware, and household objects. The business has gradually business has expanded to include painted wooden household items. Inspirations include ethnic and outsider art, and natural forms. There are always new color and pattern combinations to discover. I work alone and with occasional assistance from my daughter Aubre. People tell me my work looks like I have a lot of fun-- and I do! br> I earned a BFA University of Connecticut 1969. Most of my corporate jobs have been art-related, such as bookjacket and package design. Eleven years of textile design taught me about pattern, color, and painting on a small scale. My work experience includes: 3 years book jacket designer for Doubleday & Co., NYC/ 1 year senior designer 3 years packaging designer for Container Corporation of America, Arlington, TX Freelance graphic designer for textiles, stationery, advertising 11 years textile designer in NYC

Artist Statement:
"I have been making art since I was a small child. My parents, grandmother, and even my great grandmother were artists and I realize now that I was constantly surrounded with interesting visual images. As tiny children, my sister and I would sit and make paper doll clothes for hours. We also loved decorating plain objects and making very elaborate mud pies. Jewelry-making was an early interest, and since I'm a packrat, I probably still have some of the beads I bought in 1950!"

Technique:
My theme jewelry is made from layers of collage and decoupage. Parts are painted, glued, and embellished. The images are copies of original designs or in some cases enhanced images in the public domain. The wooden pieces are all functional while decorative. They are painted and embellished with several kinds of paint and polyurethane. In some cases my own designs are color copied and applied.
