Amy Grogan

Background:
Amy Grogan graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1988 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Since 1992 she has been a part-time art instructor at the Ah-Haa School for the Arts in Telluride, Colorado. Amy moved to Silverton in 1998 where she founded Wize Owl Originals: unique pastel landscapes, custom pet portraits and handmade greeting cards. In 1999 she was awarded an artist residency with the San Juan National Forest in the La Plata Mountains. Amy has been in numerous art exhibitions throughout the United States. She is currently represented by the East End Gallery in Telluride.

Artist Statement:
"For the past ten years Amy Grogan has lived and painted in the San Juan Mountains in southwest Colorado. This mysterious and gorgeous landscape is her canvas. Amy seeks out remote views and special places to paint in pastel: high alpine basins, isolated valleys and wilderness lakes. The variety of geography and geology enable her to create a full palette of color in her work. The frequent dramatic lighting on peaks, trees and water keeps Amy's enthusiasm for new paintings strong."

Technique:
Amy paints landscapes with pastel on heavy weight watercolor paper. She frequently uses her hands and fingers in order to blend several layers and numerous colors to create a rich three-dimensional view. Amy's technique includes both blended areas and sharp line work. She prefers pastel because of its vibrancy and its immediacy on paper, meaning she can blend colors directly on paper.
