Kaki Glaze

Traditional glaze from the village of Mashiko, Japan, created by grinding local rock. According to Hamada Shoji it was named for the color that a persimmon is on October 24.

Kaolin

See also “china clay.” The anglicized form of the Chinese term for clay. Kao-lin meaning “high hill,” probably refers to Kaoling, the mountain in China where this white clay was first discovered.

Karat

A proportional unit used to describe the purity of gold alloys. Based on the number 24, gold alloys can be described by the percentage of gold in a sample; 14 karat, for instance, refers to the fraction 14/24ths, or 58.5% gold. A more scientific description, gaining in popularity and standard in Europe, is to refer to parts per thousand, or .585.

Kenzan

A spiked piece of metal in which flower stems are wedged in order to hold them upright. Used in vases for ikebana, the Japanese art of arranging flowers.

Keum-bo

A Korean jewelry-making technique where 24K gold is heat-fused to silver.

Kewazinga Wood

A wood from western Africa, distinguished by its reddish-brown color streaked with dark purple.

Kickwheel

A potter's machine for working clay with a centrifugal motion propelled by kicking.

Kiln

A furnace or oven built of heat-resistant materials for firing pottery, glass and sculpture.

Kiln-forming

A glass-forming processes that utilize a kiln to heat glass in a refractory or heat-resistant mold, slump glass over a form, or fuse two or more pieces of glass together.

Kinetic

Art that incorporates actual movement as part of the design. Kinetic art is art that incorporates movement as part of its expression – either mechanically, by hand, or by natural forces.

Kinetic Sculpture

A kinetic sculpture is a sculpture which is designed to move. The movement can be driven by interaction with the viewer, or automatically using motors or even air currents in the case of a mobile.

Kneading

Working clay on a surface with the palms of the hands to remove air and obtain uniform consistency.

Korean Kiln

Climbing kiln, a type of hill kiln for wood firing.
