Background:
Over the years I have spent untold hours at used bookshops and junk stores combing through boxes of unwanted paraphernalia in search of out-of-date school books, old postcards, used picture books and discarded family photographs. The carefully chosen bits and pieces, the success of my labors, get to come home with me and are most likely shoved into drawers or added to piles in the corners of my work space. But, eventually they reemerge and get a second chance at life as they become the inspiration for my new paintings. For several years I have been working on a series of paintings that began with a drawing of a dog, his back to the viewer, pensively looking across the water. This image, Black Dog in Chestertown came to me from a favorite postcard of mine, and since then "Chestertown", along with "Mr. and Mrs. Logan", "Wally" and "Joe" have all become familiar names found in the titles of my paintings. In each painting, I use images that are both detached and engaging at the same time. Each canvas is intended to be a curious and intriguing story that evokes feelings of mystery and enigma. Searching for an uneasy juxtaposition, the dark, silhouetted images adrift in the bold, brightly colored landscapes allow cryptic and enigmatic messages to emerge. A story begins to evolve, but is never completely told. In some of my most recent work, the silhouette has disappeared revealing for the first time some of the "personalities" that appear in my work. My intention here is to maintain the enigmatic feeling that is characteristic of the silhouetted images, but with a different, more cerebral twist. The dog show paintings are at last, serious maneuvers indicating the relationship of the dog and master.

Technique:
The digital prints are the outcome of a desire to see my images become more accessible and affordable. Most of the prints are directly derived from my painted images. Some are photographic images that have been "painted" on and enhanced in the computer. Printing archivally has given me the ability to create my images over and over in a small scale without losing the original integrity of the paintings.
