Apple Trees Original Oil Painting
By: Lorna Ritz
Studio:Lorna Ritz Originals
 Specifics: crayon on paper

The mountains where I live most often draw themselves with thick blue-black paint in those forever-slow, undulating curves. The landscape reveals itself in unexpected ways like that. The landscape is like an animal observing you, a presence you feel. As you face it you find that sense of place from within your own self, like an animal that has risen up and sat back down, as the light pulsates through fast-moving, low-hanging clouds on the mountains, and you wonder, What just happened?

The mountains are like large wild animals you can reach out and pet. They are warm and fuzzy and totally joyful in their redness at this time of year. I am saturated in the after-peak color of the trees throughout the landscape. The rolling orange-red mountains are so alive from the dispersion of pieces of sunlight up against deep dark sensuous curves of blues from the cloud shadows. They pulsate back and forth, constantly changing, like a sparking jewel.

Background:
Based in South Amherst, Lorna Ritz has traveled widely as at teacher, lecturer and artist-in-residence. Most recently she was a member of the painting faculty at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence (1995-96) and received a grant from the US information Agency to teach and exhibit her work at the Institute de Belles Artes, Medellin, Colombia (1990). Ritz has received numerous invitations to present lectures at various institutions, among them the American University, Washington DC (1991); and the New York Studio School, New York (1990). Ritz's work has been included in one-person and group exhibitions internationally including the Bowery Gallery, New York (1994-95); the Hillyer Gallery, Smith College, Northampton (1994); and the Mona Bismarck Foundation, Paris (1991).

After receiving a BFA from Pratt Institute and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, both in painting and sculpture, I taught at various colleges, (R.I. Studio School,(1990); and the Institute for American Universities in Aix-en-Provence, France, 1986).

I have travelled through the U.S. Information Agency to Malta, 1986; Honduras to teach at the University, 1983. I had my first solo exhibition at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetwon, Massachusetts, in 1975. My paintings have been exhibited through the "Art-in-Embassies Program" in D.C., in Brazaville, the Congo; Banjul, The Gambia; Valetta, Malta; and Praia, Cape Verde; and Guatemala, 1984-93.
Some exhibitions took place at: solo at the Divinity Center at Yale University, (1976); the Bowery Gallery in NYC, (1994 and 1995); two-person with my mentor James Gahagan at Hillyer Gallery at Smith College, (1994), solo at the Fine Arts Center's University Gallery at U.of Massachusetts, (1998); the Hood Museum at Dartmouth College, (1982); I had work at the Smith Museum of Art in 2001. I was in a group show this summer at the Ralls Collection in D.C. My most recent solo exhibition took place at the Huntington Museum in Windsor, Connecticutt in 2002. My paintings were in the "Summer Invitational" at "The Painting Center," (Soho), NYC, and at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, and are included in a group exhibition at The Washington Art Association in Washington Depot, Connecticutt in September, 2003. I have twice received the Pollock-Krasner Grant Awards, (in 1990 as well as in 1997), and received a Kittredge Fund Grant from Harvard University in 2000. Last autumn, (2001), I taught painting through the American University, (D.C.). in Umbria, Italy.

My paintings are collected by Hale and Dorr Law Firm, (Boston), Bank of Boston, Johnson and Johnson, (N.J.), Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, (N.M.), and the Burnham Institute, (CA.), to name a few.

Artist Statement:
"Painting has enabled me to be a kinder person. I have learned patience and inner strength. My painting is a form of prayer of gratitude, by living present in the moment to the dictates of paint itself as ruler. My painting is at the core of my personal life's journey on a daily basis. When I awaken in the morning, I can't wait to live the day as fully as possible, seeing it as a privilege to be able to push a given painting along further from the previous day's work and, in fact, the last painting. I believe in practicing my skill as much as possible, as one would practice a musical instrument, to be there when this thing called revelation comes. There is always another level unfolding to the next one down the road. Ideas beget more interesting ideas."

Technique:
I am a painter of space and light, two ephemeral elements that transcend object. Each painting has its own specific inner light through the relationship of the colors emanating off the landscape. Recently I have been painting the ancient walls of Italy. I am influenced by what nature does over long periods of time. The walls of Pompeii were beaten by rain and wind and sun for 2000 years; I felt as though these walls entered my body as I walked through, seeping through my skin, eyes and hair....all throughout my body physically. The surfaces of my paintings have been actively influenced by the walls of Pompeii since, yet a further vocabulary for me for exploring depth on the flat surface on linen.
