Artist fashions fine writing instruments and original gift items to look like jewels

Tom Sabo creates unique, beautifully crafted pens, letter openers, wine bottle stoppers and other one-of-a-kind treasures to give and to own.

Craftsman Tom Sabo is fulfilling one of his greatest passions as he embarks on a second career of creating beautifully handcrafted gifts from exotic woods, precious metals and acrylics. Fine writing instruments, wine bottle accessories and other original gift items make up his repertoire.

After retiring from the Reprographics Department at the California State Assembly, Tom and his wife, Kris, relocated to the small town of Sagle in beautiful northern Idaho. Tom immediately began building his dream workshop to house the tools of his craft. Many of the tools he had purchased remained unopened while he worked to complete the construction of his shop.

When Tom finally unpacked his wood lathe, he noticed that the manufacturer had included a pen-turning kit. Tom had never done any woodturning and certainly had never considered making pens. It was serendipitous, to say the least.

Although Tom will be the first to tell you that his initial attempts were “a little rough,” he quickly learned the art of woodturning by reading books from the local library, watching videos and “turning wood.” He is a completely self-taught artisan.

His fine writing instruments become works of art

It soon became evident that he was truly an artist creating beautiful pens that could only be considered works of art rather than simply useful. Tom then tried his hand at other items such as letter openers, pencils, wine bottle stoppers and various high quality gifts and designs. His natural creativity is evident in the beauty of those items as well.

He continues to produce one handcrafted item after another, with each one being more beautiful and intricate than the previous.

Tom uses only higher end pen mechanisms including Monte Blanc, Cross, American Classic and Parker brands. “I feel fortunate to have found a rewarding second career crafting my small works of art and knowing that my hand-made creations are making both gift givers and recipients happy. It pleases me that my works bring others pleasure. I approach each new work with a sense of excitement. I love feeling the wood and other materials in my hands and enjoy a sense of accomplishment as I complete a new work.“

Tom Sabo spends most of his time in his workshop these days crafting fine wood pens and other original gifts. His wife Kris supports his hobby turned business. Even their two dogs, Harley and Beemer help out by keeping the shop clean under the equipment with their nonstop wagging tails.
