Artist communicates changing moods and splendor of nature through his wildlife and landscape paintings
 
Terry Martin easily moves from impressionistic to realistic interpretations of the natural beauty he sees in the Ozark Mountains. He captures the many moods of the seasons with a talent reminiscent of the early European masters.

Inspired by the beauty of the hills and glens of the ever-changing Ozark Mountains, artist Terry Martin has clearly communicated his love and reverence for nature through his paintings. With only a paintbrush, he conveys the beauty of a sun rising gloriously over a placid pond where two swans glide amid shades of pale yellow, orange, blue and lavender.

In another work, he shares the brisk chill of a winter’s day as a pheasant picks carefully through the windswept snows of a farmer’s field. A half-broken-down fence gate tells of a time when the land, now sleeping in winter’s respite, was green and productive.

A young Martin took up pencil and brush to record nature’s wonders

Terry notes that his paintings spring from his awe and love of nature, which was nurtured early in childhood and has remained a sustaining force throughout his life. As a child he walked and explored the Ozark trails and woods with his father and brother. It was then that his observational study of nature led him to numerous drawings and paintings.
 

“It seemed to me, my mother gave me the power to create, and along with my father, they promoted imagination, skill, and a child’s ability to make something new out of ordinary stuff,” he recalls. “They believe that everyone has potential for creativity.”

His watercolor selected to appear on a Missouri Trout Stamp

Terry’s skill in communicating the beauties of nature through his paintings was noticed and rewarded in 1983 when one of his watercolors of a trout was selected for use as the first competitive Missouri Trout Stamp. This opportunity created other opportunities to illustrate and paint portrayals of nature.

His illustrations appear in the popular "Fly Fishing for Trout in Missouri" by Chuck and Sharon Tryon.

Terry formalized his artistic skills when he earned several degrees including a BS, MEd and MFA from the University of Missouri-Columbia Colleges of Education and Fine Art.

In addition to his artistic pursuits, he has focused his time and energy toward teaching and parenting. He is presently a Professor of Studio Art at William Woods University in Fulton, MO. There, he is a signature member of the International Society of Experimental Artists, the National Society of Oil and Acrylic Painters, a juried member of the art association Best of Missouri Hands, the Mid-America Pastel Society and the Missouri Watercolor Society.

He is currently exhibiting in the Kemper Art Gallery at the William Woods University in Fulton.

“I enjoy working in a number of media and try to communicate the mystery and romance I experience as I contemplate the majesty of nature. Phenomena such as weather, behavior of animals and man’s role as a steward of the Earth are of interest to me as I communicate through painting. "
