As well as an established artist, Melissa Zimmerman is a stay-at-home mother of three children all under the age of four and under. She is a self-taught artist, who began doodling back in school days. Her early drawings consisted of individuals or groups of people such as cheerleaders. Over the years she has captured a ranged over a variety of subjects including people, faces, flowers, birds, landscapes, nature, and even a faucet.

otographs provided by her customers. Melissa has been drawing with graphite since the beginning. Once she discovered that she had a knack for creating a likeness, she became interested in colored pencil because she always wanted to create in color but did not like to work with paints. She enjoys the control of a pencil and the sharp lines it allows. Plus the finished result can have paint like appearance if it’s crafted right.

An interesting aspect of her techniques is that she often draws her portraits upside down which helps her identify shapes more easily. As a typical artist, she finds it is very satisfying to watch a work unfold and come together. She adds,

“It is fun to watch someone you know
begin to look at you out of the paper.”
